Intent. I think children sense if it is being done out of love verses the parent's own self interest or subconscious hangups. Whenever a parent disciplines a child in anger, they might be projecting their own issues on the child. When children are not loved unconditionally (I love you even though you aren't perfect), it makes them feel less worthy. When we are raised this way, we become more easily depressed than other people.....
