I think this is even more pronounced when I am in the presence of yet someone else. I tend to get quite formal when it comes to introductions. I will introduce someone as an acquaintance when I am unsure of where we stand - especially if we haven't encountered one another in some time. Perhaps there has been hurt feelings but that is the way it is.
