Yes, sometimes people exaggerate the closeness of a past friendship. I personally believe in keeping a meeting after 2 years at a formal place. I dont believe in making anything something it isnt especially relationships.
Lol...Im not looking forward to the awkward situation I have coming up in a few months. I left my H 10 years ago ( ran out of $ for the divorce). I am going back there to get my horse & get some of my things out of the house (cloths) that I left that he hadnt put into my moving truck at that time (totally leaving him wasnt actually PLANNED at that time). UGH, thst is an encounter I actually dread & will try to find someone who can go there with me to the house because he is the last person I want to encounter alone even after being away for 10 years. I was seeing red from anger before I left him. Time & living a peaceful life has changed me but nothing has changed him as is obvious by the impacts that are still occuring to my own personal credit. My name is still on the house loan because there qas no way to force him to sell or refinance.
Just thinking about my situation, I can seriously feel for your experience....but you were WISE to keep it formal upon re-meeting even after 2 years.
