When I was in severe pain at night and screaming for hours, my sister woke and sat with me all night. She could have woken my parents to hand over the "duty", she could have moved to the guest room at the other end of the house and slept, she could have done both.. but she just sat with me, occasionally trying to distract me when I was distractable.
