I live in a tiny house on my mom's property. I pay a small rent that hopefully will increase soon as some bills are paid off. We have supper at her house most nights. I provide dogsitting for her several days per week most weeks and don't charge her unless she's away for a week. In July she'll be away 2 weeks and I'll only get paid for one of them. I do housework as I can and she helps with the big stuff. It works. I was living in a town about 30 minutes from here in a house I owned but with disability it was too much to pay the mortgage and I needed too much help. It helps a lot to have her to help when I'm unwell and having help also helps me stay well.
