Whose call is it then?? I'm not trying to be confrontational; just trying to understand your POV. Yes, patients can be in denial and think that their diagnosis is wrong (I'm not saying that is or isn't what's happening in this case as I don't know), but Drs can also be wrong. Patients have the right to disagree with their diagnosis and seek a second opinion.
That's what I did. I was adamant that I was misdiagnosed a couple of years ago, so I went back to a pdoc I trusted who knew me much better than the idiots who misdiagnosed me. I told him what they said and that I was sure they were wrong, but that I also very much did not want this highly stigmatised diagnosis on my file so I could theoretically have been in denial about it. We went through the DSM criteria and discussed how I didn't fit even one of them and so couldn't possibly have that diagnosis. I've since had 2 other pdocs and multiple nurses IP agree that I don't have that diagnosis. So I was right.
Medicine, and psychiatry especially, is just as much an art as it is a science. So misdiagnosis is common. If in doubt, a person should always trust their gut and seek a second opinion.
