So, among other things, I was a bit of an arse yesterday and told her that I thought she'd lived her life strictly on the straight and narrow and never flouted convention (she talked about liking Adrienne Rich's poetry and I was like "Really? You?").

She (understandably) got a bit pissy and so I asked her if she had ever gone against the norm etc. She immediately gave examples of dating people of color, including apparently one from my motherland despite her family being Republican and (by implication) not being very cool with her PoC love interests.

I know that must've taken some courage but I'll confess I felt a bit like I was watching a remake of "Guess who's coming to dinner" or something.
