yes his emotional crisis in adulthood caused his dissociative problem to be noticeable but in an interview about his having DID he stated it was caused by early childhood abuse (physical and psychological abuse) he underwent before he was 5 years old.
its very common for people with DID to not know they have it until adulthood when they go through some sort of emotional crisis like depression, and other mental issues. I would not have known I had had DID if I hadnt had depression and also in college class we were required to take a psych eval and enter treatment based on the psych eval for the duration of that psychology class.
