I think I, at least, learned crisis thinking as a child, when for me lots was a crisis. The brain is saying it is still a crisis, sending messages and pumping hormones to keep me prepared to act. Only we (I, at least) could not act as a child. The only ways I could figure how to act were prohibited. Now the crisis is over (yes, it mostly really is). How to learn that, in the face of the brain messages telling us it is not? The only thing that seems to be working for me, and that very slowly, is to take a few tentative risks in therapy and other places (such as here), and find out that something is wrong with my thinking. Very slowly I am coming to realize that what I think is happening that requires an immediate response is not happening, at least not the way it seems. Very hard.
