... was born Thursday morning. He looks beautiful and perfect. Within a short time, his parents realized he couldn't swallow right and was drooling way more than a baby should. He was tested and found to have esophageal atresia (ever heard of it?). His esophagus was not fully formed and was not connected to his stomach. Day 2 of his life he had major surgery to sew his esophagus together! The surgery appears to be successful. The poor little baby is doped up on morphine but still often in pain.

He'll be tested for all kinds of associated birth defects. So far this looks to have been isolated. I sure hope he's okay otherwise. Sometimes there's just no preparation for what life can throw at you. His mom had to have an emergency C-section during the delivery too.
Please think good thoughts about my baby nephew.
