Still, that is an awful way to treat people, to not give them any warning or time to plan, they were just told not to come back.
I agree, it is awful. They should be let it be known ahead of time if they are going to be laid off and if it is a performance or behavioral issue, then a warning and maybe even a deadline to improve performance or behavior would be good before letting someone go.
