The military is not a soft option. You cannot leave for a set number of years unless you are discharged on health grounds. You go awol they arrest you. Not to mention putting your life at risk. Risk of ending up with ptsd or injured. My grandfather joined because he had not much choic e he was an orphan and my dad joined at 15 because home life was difficult and there wasnt much choice at the time either. He would never have left and never got over the loss,he lived in the past. So i vowed never to turn out like that. If he couldn,t do a "mans" job he prefered to sit n chain smoke all day watching black n white war films.
I couldnt have someone else dictate my life for me, a drill sergeant screaming in my face, this idea that they are the best. I never wanted to be a hero.
So i dont agree with compulsory service to discipline the wayward youth of today. Evidently.
