Could you indirectly encourage other people to lead the conversation?

Like, if they ask, "do you like cake?", you're going to give your one-word answer of yes or no. Then, instead of being silent, you can try saying to them, "what about you?"

You could also give compliments so that you don't seem angry. "By the way, wow! I really like those shoes!" Then ask questions like "where'd you get them?" etc etc.. That's a good way to start a convo in my experience. People like being complimented and you come across as really friendly
