I have the other hyperac- (twins that are both evil?) hyperacusis. I don't hear everything, but I startle and feel pain that I would swear is physical from certain sounds. I can be watching a movie with the volume fairly high and someone closes a hardback book with "that sound" and I will practically levitate even if it is at a lower decibel level than the movie.

If I go too loud with the movie, my left ear will get a crackling sound and the audiologist says that isn't physical either. When I go to an action movie at the theater, I plug my ears and get a closed caption device.

I only get hyperacusis when hypomanic.

Since starting lamictal, my "center" has moved up a few notches from very slightly depressed to very slightly manic. I like this change because I smile and laugh a *lot* more. I just have to watch out for inappropriate comments and put up with the hyperacusis. I carry adjustable earplugs (they have a small inner hole that you plug or unplug) to deal with it; not sure if that is an option for you.
