Hmmm....sounds like a dilemma. You're right the docs don't like self-diagnosis, it would be nice if we could get by with it But seriously, you should see your doc and tell your symptoms and let it go from there. However..I will tell you this about amitriptyline:

My stepmother's mother was on it for many years, started out short term, which it is indicated for, and ended up being 19 years and extreme addiction, ending in hospitalization and extreme psychosis. Not saying it will happen to you, just saying it does happen.

These drugs are indicated for very short term use, some people take them longer than others, some have no issues with addiction. My husband took Nortriptyline and had no effects from it at all. It's according to the person.

If you trust your doctor, then talk to them about it. Sometimes things are not as they seem. Good luck!
