I totally agree about the one-cookie factor. From years of trying and failing I think if it feels like a restricted diet, one will fail. So I agree you have to find a diet that feels comfortable for you long term and not eating much meat/fish must make that very tough!
Luckily(?!) I am now a diet-controlled diabetic so I pretty much have no choice. Though the temptation to go on insulin and enjoy some ice cream is sometimes strong.
