This question is pretty dependent on the individual, I think. I've done crazy %#@&#! to avoid using. Once I even chewed on a dog's rawhide bone, just to cope with the tension. I've used hot showers, calls to friends, video games, food, masturbation, writing, and anything else that's popped into my head. None of it solves the problem, but it gets me through the moments and every moment without using is a victory (especially during cravings).
