I wanted to add this earlier, but had to run.

My ex, who is very much like this bf of yours, has lived off women during the times in his life when he was not homeless. He always got women to take him in, and then they all ended up throwing him out!

The bottom line is the guy can't stand on his own two feet and he uses women to fall back on when he can find nice ones like you and me.
