I actually find helping others helps me in a few ways.

Some would look upon that as selfish.
I see it as "sharing".
So when I have hard times, others come and share with me. That's what makes it work.

I think those are good, healthy ways of looking at it. I suspect a lot of people do so, but maybe haven't articulated it as such.
