I've started packing up his clothes and started trying to divide up the stuff we've accumulated over the years. I have all his important documents like social security card and birth certificate. What am I supposed to do with all this stuff? He may be going to prison for a long time. The minimum sentence for arson in our state is 7 1/2 years. Am I obligated to be the keeper of his things from now on? He's not on good terms with his family and they live on the other side of the country. His only friend wouldn't have room to store his things for him and doesn't live here either. I really don't know what to do. Does anyone have any words of wisdom for me?

Do you have a lawyer? I would ask them.
In my case when I went to Canada for six months for work last year I put both our possessions in a storage unit, then when I returned to my current apartment I separated them out and moved his to a smaller unit. On which I paid the rent for the next ten months before my lawyer got him to take it over.
(So it's doubly obnoxious that he'd insist on stipulations in the divorce decree as to why he hadn't yet reclaimed his possessions--he's paying the rent, who cares?)
