That’s great on both counts, making you feel good and the gentleness!

When you say frustrating, I’m pretty sure that he must be frustrated too, especially since he clearly admits not having a personal reference point. I think he must care about you and wishes he could help but it’s hard not knowing how and being limited from the business position he is in.

I can somewhat understand, since few years ago I had an employee who I really liked but they too were doing battle with an illness and I was strongly encouraged to stop protecting and make sure I was following policy and protocol...

I felt really caught in an internal struggle trying to balance the employee needs, the team frustrations on not being able to count on that person and the business needs....

A no win situation... in the long run, half of the department was let go, the employee explored other opportunities to be more accommodating to her circumstance and she’s so much happier. I’m retired and I still keep in touch with her.
