as for the last question it depends on wether you are attempting to get ssdi for which you need 20 work credits in the last ten years or ssi which doesnt have that requirement but is income based. So for SSI it would depend on household income and for SSDI it would not.

If you look in the phone book you might see listings for lawyers that used to work for social security and are now on their own. They know the system best.
