I had gerd for years and it got to the point where even drinking water gave me heart burn.
I finally got an endoscopy. It turned out that I had several active ulcers, and many scars from past ulcers that had healed. The ulcers are caused by the H.Pylori bacterium. A course of antibiotics targeted to this germ got a rid of it. I finally got relief after suffering for decades.
Your new GI may be on the right track. I would follow through with him. surgery is a last resort and it probably won't come to that.
