I first heard this song sung my George Beverly Shea who sings/sang with the Billy Graham Crusades. I've since lost the album that I had. George had a "preamble" that he spoke before he started singing. I can't find the lyrics with that "preamble" but I'm going to adlib as I can remember because to me, that was the best part of the song.
When we stand on the shore, we can only see a little of the ocean. So it is with God's love. We can only see a little of God's love, but out there, there's more... there's more!
The love of God is greater far
Than tongue or pen can ever tell;
It goes beyond the highest star,
And reaches to the lowest hell;
The guilty pair, bowed down with care,
God gave His Son to win;
His erring child He reconciled,
And pardoned from his sin.
Could we with ink the ocean fill,
And were the skies of parchment made,
Were every stalk on earth a quill,
And every man a scribe by trade,
To write the love of God above
Would drain the ocean dry.
Nor could the scroll contain the whole,
Though stretched from sky to sky.
O love of God, how rich and pure!
How measureless and strong!
It shall for evermore endure,
The saints' and angels' song.
I hope you are richly blessed by the words of this song, just like I was.
