Nah, it is a nice thing to do. They obviously didn't mind, either. Though... I would ask before doing it in future because sometimes people throw away sensitive documents in the trash (financial statements and the like) and so because of that... There are privacy laws about not being allowed to go through someones trash without there permission (I think).
