I think what you did was great. I always take stuff I don't want anymore to Goodwill or other charities. As an aside, it's kind of traditional here in certain neighbourhoods for people to put stuff they don't want anymore out on the curb with free signs on it a couple of days before the first of the month (moving day) and lots of university students come round to pick up stuff to furnish their places.
