But also excessive guilt can have its roots in childhood in a dysfunctional family. Were you guilt tripped a lot as a child? Were you told that your needs weren't important and invalidated? Were you ever told that you were selfish for trying to get your needs met? There are many things that cause a person to suffer from free floating guilt as an adult.

Yes, I was guilt tripped as a child. I came from a fundamentalist family and if I was 6 years old and tried to make an excuse for something I did wrong my mom would say, "That's what the devil would say." She also tells me I need exercise to this day, and I'm barely over the BMI range for overweight. I hate my family.
