I almost never forget my meds. I take my morning meds with breakfast, which my husband and I eat together (he also takes his meds, which I hand to him). I take my evening meds with dinner, which is again a ritual and at the same exact time each day. My husband and I use pill boxes, so we always know if we've taken them.
On very rare occasions if we skip breakfast I have forgotten my morning meds, but I usually remember because something goes amuk with my moods by the afternoon. If I forget my evening meds, such as if hubby eats out with friends, I always eventually remember because I can't get to sleep without them.
I take a med that ideally should be taken 30-60 mins before I eat. I used to take it then, but often forgot it. I eventually asked my doctor if I could skip that 30-60 min before eating rule. He said yes, but that we'd monitor the levels. It turned out OK. Taking it with breakfast has ensured that I hardly ever forget it nowadays.
A long time ago I used to take my Tegretol XR three times per day. I often forgot the afternoon dose. I asked my doctor if I could just take it twice per day (take more in the morning and evening instead) and he eventually said yes. That solved that problem.
Honestly, taking meds fewer times per day is helpful psychologically. The way and frequency I take them seems to ease the frustration of feeling like I'm always popping pills. Of course I would NEVER take them differently without my psychiatrist's approval.
