I think you can live there but not be involved with your neighbors or the board. It's not a requirement. I am barely ever home enough to even know my neighbours. I'd not be discussing anything with neighbours for an hour (that's way too long, she probably thought yiucare about management and have free time) and wouldn't join the board. There are other interest and hobby type organizations that you can join and they'd bring you joy. There are ways to stay out of drama.
