Hello Bromstrom: I see this is your first post here on PC. So... welcome to PsychCentral! I hope you find the time you spend here to be of benefit.

With regard to your question, what I can tell you is that I'm an old man who has struggled with gender identity issues since early childhood. I've seen a few different therapists for brief periods over the years. They ranged from mediocre to dreadful! (I'll spare you the details.) So my response to your question is yes. The problem you describe is certainly one a therapist could potentially help you with.

From my perspective, though, it's important to find a therapist who is knowledgeable, as well as experienced, in working with individuals who have sexual orientation issues. A therapist who is not can, in my experience, do more harm than good. And it can take a few tries to find the right therapist for you. Not every therapist works well with every client. It would be nice if there were some formula one could use to identify the perfect therapist. But there's not. It's just mostly trial-&-error I'm afraid.

So certainly do check into this. It could be a real turning point for you. Just be cautious I would say. Good luck... and please keep posting here on PC. It can help too!
