I grew up ignorant & full of shame when it came to sex. My mother told me the AIDS epidemic in the 1970's was the work of the devil....& many other horrible things.....
Anyway, I always vowed if I had kids that they would be the one the others wento on the playground! There's always that kid that knows a lot more & becomes the source of info for those in the dark.
I discuss sex with them a lot. The biological aspects of it using the correct terms, pictures & science info. (Nothing based on religion). We also discuss the latest slang words that pop up on social media or from their friends. Even in music. Sometimes I have to look stuff up too. I want them to know! So they have the facts & don't feel ignorant like I did for way too long.
My 12yo is finally starting to get comfortable asking questions. Nothing big, but something she overhears & might not understand she asks me about it.
I love that! Inside really I'm jumping up & down but I try to keep it casual & open.
I do hope it makes a difference in their life, how they view their bodies, sex, love & it helps make them more confident in themselves.
