The feeling of waking up terrified and short of breath.
I think it can. My mum has a similar problem and she hasn't got a mental issue. She is currently undergoing testing by cardiologists. All I know so far is that she is short of breath and her heart is racing. It only happens overnight.

My advice is to tell your GP about it. They're less likely to assume your issue is psychiatric and will do a broader investigation.
