Peace and love
Those are some tough things to take care of. I'm sure the dog knew you loved him in your own way. Even calling him you "little pain in the a__" He probably knew that was out of love. I truly believe that animals go to heaven and that we will see them again one day. When they cross the rainbow bridge their pain and suffering is gone. It's painful but at least they are not suffering anymore. When the time is right getting another pet may be good for the family. You have a soft place in your heart for dogs, and a lot of love to give to one. There's a little mut out there that needs a good forever home.
