I often wake up in the middle of the night and search my apartment too. Some part of me knows it's not real, but another truly believes it is. It started to happen to me when I took St. Johns Wart before bedtime. (7 nights in a row).

Every antidepressant I've taken has given me a weird metallic taste in my mouth, and I often experience a weird smell (especially around paper towels)

Maybe it's drug related?
