That's been my experience. I started needing less sleep in my 40's and while I'd love to get 7 hours at a stretch, my body doesn't seem to do that. I tend to sleep 5-6 hours at night and nap at some point during the day. I know my mother was the same way.
Insomnia to me was getting only 2-4 hours a night, sometimes absolutely no sleep for two or three days straight. Those bouts of insomnia inevitably landed me in the hospital. Thank God that finally went away.
