I think the best thing you can do for your son (and indirectly for his friend) is to be available to listen non-judgmentally when/if your son wants to talk. That seems to be the key with young adults: they want space most but then they might also want comfort and support if you can provide it without infringing on their space/privacy/autonomy. Pushing too much is probably the worst thing you can do.
