Art, I'm sorry he's miserable (and making you miserable!) I'm sure I've told this story before. Once went to urgent care convinced I had a bowel obstruction because I was in so much pain. Turns out it was "trapped" gas. Got a prescription for gut muscle relaxers and it passed pretty quickly afterwards. Because it was urgent care not a gastroenterologist I never got an explanation other than intestinal spasms.

Hopefully he will get his butt (no pun intended) to the doctor and get some medicine to have on hand next time.
