Well... since you posted this yesterday, presumably your day at work today has already occurred. Hopefully it went well & you're okay.

In reference to your question, I suppose it would depend on who the people are. If they were co-workers perhaps one could just explain the situation to them & ask them for some consideration. If the people were clients or customers, that sort of thing, then of course it's a different situation. Then I think one would just have to do one's best to not take the trouble they dole out to heart... difficult as that may be.
