I had to learn how to be assertive with them. It's not easy. But there are ways of doing it (by staying as professional as possible, and keeping every ounce of emotion out of your interactions).
I know you said your mother wouldn't like it if you went up against them. But is there one, small thing you could do on your own initiative?

In terms of stopping the mice, I'm really just trying to keep the place clean and I'm going to buy some steel wool to stuff up holes. In the meantime, I'll use aluminum foil. That's the best I can think of for now.

And I know this sounds weird but thanks for saying that it doesn't have to be too ambitious. Too many times I get too hard on myself for not doing everything at once or for not doing anything "big", even though everyone has to go at their own pace and that pace may be different for others.
