Whenever I have felt that kind of loneliness and emptiness, I distract myself and keep myself occupied and busy with something.

For instance, I start cleaning, or I start writing, or watching TV, reading, or taking a walk. I have even walked into town to the local coffee shop to just be around the general public so I won't feel lonely. Staying busy occupies the mind and takes your focus off your thoughts.

I also practice present moment awareness. I may be aware that I am lonely, but I focus all of my attention on that one activity and put my energy into it, taking my mind off of my thoughts. This helps.

Other than that, if you have family members you can talk to, I also suggest calling or texting a family member when those feelings arise. Or, getting on the forum and replying to others' posts and helping others.

Another idea is to volunteer somewhere so that you feel less lonely? An animal shelter?
