I have mostly been going every other week for several years. There were times when I went to out of network tdocs that I went as infrequently as every 3 weeks, but I felt that was too infrequently.
If I'm very unwell my tdoc will offer weekly sessions. I've done that, but usually only for a few weeks. If I'm VERY unwell and may be for a while, my psychiatrist suggests an Intensive Outpatient Program. In all cases, my tdoc has been in agreement with him.
I believe that I see my psychiatrist more often than many other people. He also gives me at least 20 mins. I see him on average every 3 weeks, but more than once per month. Given that, seeing my tdoc more than every 2 weeks is not really necessary. When I am unwell or having major medication adjustments I see my psychiatrist every other week or even more. When very unwell, I sometimes see my psychiatrist more than my therapist. My psychiatrist offers some therapy in the 20 mins, though he insists that I have a therapist, too, whom I see for 1 hour sessions.
Because of my psychiatrist's caring and attention, I have avoided hospitalization for 8 years now, despite some pretty awful manias and depressions.
