I think gabapentin is less dangerous. I had a classmate who took gabapentin - she was originally prescribed pregabalin, but they wouldn't give it to her because it had more dangerous side effects than gabapentin, and given her age, they decided to start with gabapentin.

Don't know how that works exactly - I've never been on gabapentin, just on pregabalin, and I was 14 when I started (she was 16 I think).
