Many, if not most, psychiatrists will dismiss this kind of thinking out of hand, and not try to understand it. I think it is only an exaggeration of a not-uncommon feeling that some people are trying to control you, but in ways that you cannot understand, so they seem to be invisible. You desperately try to invent explanations of how this is happening -- explanations that people deride you for having. But the truth is that you are experiencing memories of being controlled by someone you have mostly forgotten.

Let me offer a thought: he feels that he understands things which most people don't. In my opinion that is not far-fetched. It's just that his understanding is enough incoherent that he can't make complete sense of it.

i put it to him gently that it may be paranoia of some form...

I know that this is a symptom of paranoia to mistrust health professionals and sabotage any course of treatment down to suspicion

What is paranoia? A fear of something but you don't know quite what -- and since you badly need an explanation you create one. That does not mean your fears are unfounded -- just that you have forgotten their actual origins. Paranoia is a label that many use to dismiss, rather than trying to find out where the fear comes from. Don't let that happen to your friend.

You may gather from other topics here that we feel that mistrust of mental health professionals is not always misplaced.

For whatever my thoughts are worth...
