Guess: No action or inaction on your part could have prevented parental/maternal unit rejection. Considering your maternal unit, I fear it was bound to happen eventually.

Your acceptance or rejection that interpretation of what happened, however, in no way relieves any of the agony.
May you find some sort of peace, and may that peace eventually silence the voices.
