Yeah I had the same issue. For me, I had constant nightmares as a kid and was rediculed by my family about it. I never felt truely safe and I would go as far as making sure I would not fall asleep. I no longer have problems with nightmares and in the rare chance I do have one, I just turn the TV on and am able to relax so I deal with it way better now. But yeah, being alone though still affects me. Glad it has gotten easier for you.
