My not so secret weapon against bingeing on things I want is tracking everything every day. I can usually manage to go light on meals and have something I want but limit the amount. For example, I just had a fun size Baby Ruth for a snack. It makes it much easier to ignore the urge to grab a full sized one at the checkout counter.
One of the benefits of losing slowly is a less restricted diet. But the only way to make it work is either eating from a pre planned menu without straying from it or tracking everything. It's too easy to go over trying to ballpark it. A food scale is a must have, IMO, if you want to track accurately.
