first ... what follows understand i am not saying what this ex member did is right... just putting this in perspective....

someone posted they thought each of the forums should be password protected...

my opinion... this will not solve the problem. if you read the posts in this thread you will see that someone mentioned the person was a member here. that means if the forums were password protected he would have already been able to read the posts, right click copy and paste what ever posts he wanted to outside psych central anyway.

also something to consider... many mental disorders, meds and physical problems come with memory issues.. how many of us can actually remember our own passwords 100% of the time to log in here let alone the 50-100 different passwords needed in order to password protect each individual forum like suggested. the team would be so busy emailing us passwords they would not have time to moderate and do their jobs here. let alone changing the passwords every time each person got suspended for so many days, so many months ... or got banned for so much of a time period... (somewhere around here it was discussed how bannings and suspensions are not permanent most times, they are to give members time to think about what they need to do to change their own behaviors, not as a forever punishment.)

someone in the thread mentioned deleting our own posts...

we can we all have 4 hour time period where if we are second guessing what we have posted and no longer what others to see something that is too personal we can click on edit. delete the post we want deleted then replace it with the word "deleted"

after 4 hours well I remember reading somewhere there is a reason for this... that people were using this to get replies then change their posts so that replies would no longer fit what was stated in the original post, it would also cause problems for those who have replied under the self deleted posting and it also would not prevent others who have already seen the deleted post from replying about what was deleted anyway.

by having to go through the moderators the whole thread can bee deleted, not just one post if needed in order to keep the rest of the conversation intact, the moderators can also go through the thread and delete the quoted post that may have been deleted but now appears in someone else reply as a quote.

heres the part where some may take this wrong so I stated at the top that I wasnt saying this person was right in what they did, just putting this in perspective.....

some of us here post memes/ pics/ and avatars that we like from other sites like facebook, twitter, instagram, and other place too. I dont know about everyone else but I know that I do not follow that meme/ pic/ avatar or quote back to its original creator every single time. it would take years to follow a meme found on facebook back through all its thousands of shares and websites to find the creator and then message its creator to ask permission to post it here on psych central.....

my point is not to point fingers but to put this in perspective.... some outside of psych central .......could .....say we have done the same thing that this person has done....taken someone elses creation and posted it here without gaining permission to do do....

can anyone prevent us from gathering memes and so on outside psych central and bringing it , even when some of the places that these memes appear on say in fine print at the bottom of the pages that they can not be copied/ reproduced elsewhere?

no they can not, its just how the internet works.

lets reallly think about this for a moment, what has psych central done to protect us from this situation.....

we were notified at registration not to post anything of a personal nature that we would not want others to have access to, and to use a user name that we do not use somewhere else.

we were notified in the guidelines / FAQ that psych central allows google to do its thing here.

we were notified in the guidelines FAQ not to post anything of a personal nature that we would not want others to know / have access to.

my opinion is psych central did everything they could to protect us from what happened and has happened many times before in my 8 years here.... someone taking psych central posts or pics and plastering them elsewhere.

my opinion is we all have a responsibility in this too. the solution isnt on psych centrals end of things, and the solution isnt on the side of those that are doing this.

the solution is well with in ourselves by following the warnings / information that was given to us at registration and is available 24-7 for anyone to see....

if we dont want others to have access to something so personal it would upset us to find it plastered outside of psych central then dont post it.

psych central (doc john or who ever behind the scenes) did their part, now its up to us to take responsibility for our own actions. we cant control what others do outside the site and neither can anyone at psych central.

we can continue to bash an ex member for what they have placed in their website but as long as we dont follow through with our own safety rules the site gives us of not posting personal information we dont want google and others to have this is going to keep happening.

now for a situation that happened to me... I made some dissociative threads, not a day later one of those posts of mine was on no less than 6 websites. I told a friend of mine... her response..... duh its the internet. its the fastest mass media, its the fastest gossip line there is. treat every site you are on just like its facebook, twitter, instagram and the national inquirer. nothing ........anywhere..... no matter if there are security locks, passwords or not, is private on the internet. if you dont want it plastered around the net dont put it on the net.

I couldnt help but be a bit embarrassed and laughed at the same time.

my point yes this person did wrong........but.... those of us at any time who have had our words stolen and plastered somewhere else have to take responsibility for what happened too.

we have been told in more ways then one, on more than one occasion that this can happen. the rest is left up to each one of us to decide what we want to post and what we consider to be too personal for others to see, read and use outside psych central.
I agree with most of what you said. However, there is still copyright infringement going on, and, even with agreeing with you about only posting what I'm okay being searched and found here, if I find my posts copied somewhere else without my permission, I'm still going to let that site owner they need to stop or cite me. I'm within my rights to do that. Just because people steal doesn't make it right.
