I am sorry health care is suboptimal around where you live... I have few knowledge about how the system works in the UK, my pdoc sister told me you have good community care but I imagine it's most for detiorated patients with chronic diseases as psychotic ones.
Doctors are physicians, their training starts way back in medical school with pharmacology and physiology. Psychology is just one among the large amount of stuff they have to learn and when the time is short and the general knowledge focus on physiology is natural that pdocs turn to more quick fixes. The idea I get from psychiatry is that the doctors role is to diagnose and balance the patient in the least emotional involving way. The healer must be the therapist. Pdocs need to have knowledge about psychotherapy but they don't need to have a full psychotherapist training... So it's somebody else's problem.
I am not trying to excuse anyone, is just how things are and I understand both sides. I am sorry you got lost in the system.
