We started talking, at therapy, about my parent's lack of approval. Not that they didn't approve of me, they just never told me. They told my siblings, but when it came to me, heaven forbid they say it to me. As a matter of fact, they did the exact opposite to me. They told me when I was 16...
"Don't bother going to college, you will never be a teacher anyway. If by chance you do get your degree, you won't be any good at it. You might as well give up now."
Most people encourage their kids to be what ever they want to, but not my parents, they were too busy squashing my dreams.
Why! why! Why! I will never know why, because they are both dead. Why couldn't they just tell me that they were proud of me.
I did go to college, and for a lot of reasons, I quit a few years later without my degree. It was not their fault that I quit school, but I have to wonder now if they planted a seed. The funny part of it is, according to my sisters, I was the best thing since sliced cheese. My parents bragged about their daughter that was away at school all the time. I wish they could have just told me.
