I'm not a physician, but those sorts of sleep-related things happen to me all the time. I get hypnagogic (going to sleep) and hypnopompic (waking up) hallucinations frequently, and I also get sleep paralysis. I just have an overall weird state both physically and mentally when I'm going to sleep or waking up. I had a sleep study and don't have narcolepsy. The doctor told me that although what I'm experiencing is certainly frightening for me, it's harmless and to try not to worry about it. I hope this helps--it's a terrifying experience, but not one that makes you sick or "crazy."
